Final
1- I like that whenever I look at Advertisements I try to think about the purpose and what the creatives were thinking when they tried to make it.  This past semester I stayed at my Aunt and Uncle’s apartment in the city for my internship and we would always sit down and watch an hour of TV before bed.  During commercials we would always make comments and I would always wonder what the...

Companies want their brands to be connected with a certain feeling or emotion. Puma’s success today came from their ability to totally reposition their brand. 10 years ago Puma was not seen as fashionable and cool.  Now, most of puma’s sneakers aren’t the typical Running, Hiking, or Basketball sneaker.  They aren’t bought for the usual function of a shoe.  They’re...

I found this ad by surfing the web.  It’s a German ad created by the Independent women social aid organisation.  I thought the ad was very powerful, and I’m not sure if an impactful add like this would show up in the United States. What also caught me by surprise was that the girl doesn’t look like the typical abused women.  She’s young and looks like she came from the...

In Chapter Six, the class discussed the idea that glamour comes from envy. I agree with Sturken and Cartwright fully on that idea.  I never thought of envy that particular way.  But everything I percieve as glamourous is because I envy someone.  I want someone’s look or valuables because I envy their look or materials.  I want them for myself so therefor they’re glamorous.

In class we began watching the movie Idiocracy.  The movie poses the idea that the human race will become idiots because technological advances are making our lives easier for us. Parts of the movie have a valid point.  We don’t even have to know how to use a vaccum anymore. (As shown when the vacuum thing malfunctions.) However, I don’t see this idea as a large threat.  The reason why...

3 Products
Products that attempts to sell someone control over their body is Anoretix, Crest White Strips, and Proactiv.  Anoretix is a weight loss pill.  The homepage for Anoretix states that someone lost 12 lbs in 72 hours.  It makes someone loose weight quick and inevitably look better.  Crest White Strips allows consumers to whiten their teeth at an inexpensive cost with little to no pain. Glamour/Movie
Glamour comes from the images placed onto consumers by advertising and high society. Advertisements have the abilities to sell a feeling or emotion that a certain product conveys, or that the advertisers want the consumers to think it conveys. The movie we saw in class dealt with a man obsessed with a pimple.  This obsession is bought on when he realizes that successful ads come from emotion. ...

Write a paragraph on our need for mastering insecurity and fear, post-9/11, and where you found a hero on television to quell the fear. A major side effect of terrorism is instilling fear in a society. When this fear interferes with everyday activities essentially, the terrorist have won. We need to make sure that we don’t let our fear get the best of us. Post 9/11, heros portrayed on...

Subway Ads
Last and Final Seen/Unseen Blog Entry:  This has been the first year I have actually taken the subway. Whenever I ride one, I have no idea where I’m suppose to look. I don’t want look like I’m staring at people. So instead, I look at the ads.  There were a line of ads lining the top of the subway wall that caught my attention. All of them were tips on how to stay healthy.  One...

Speed is Beautiful
Seen/Unseen #4 I was driving down Main St. in Poughkeepsie and I started to notice this billboard. I read the heading “Speed is Beautiful.” But I couldn’t see what company it was for. Without knowing what the billboard was for, my first reaction was OMG! They can’t make an ad say that! For some reason, I thought they were talking about Speed, the drug. When I drove closer I...

Say Something
Seen/Unseen #3 I actually saw one of those “If you see something, say something” ads in the city. I take the train to NYC to intern every Tuesday.  I usually just walk fast to the subway to get to work. However, last Tuesday right in front of me when I got off the train was one of those ads. Two things I noticed: 1. When I first heard of these ads, I was told it was for terrorism but...

Psychoanalysis
Bernays’ studies on psychoanalysis have drastically changed marketing/adv./PR.  Through psychoanalysis advertising now targets emotions and the wants of consumers by connected a product with an emotion.  During my marketing capping class, we discussed a prime example of a product being connected to an emotion. During a case study on Coke we brainstormed the meaning of Coca-Cola.  Our list...
